Uniqlo Mines Geek Pop Culture

Japanese clothes store Uniqlo isn't a stranger to releasing T-shirts with prints displaying famous pop culture characters such as Spider-Man and Mickey Mouse, but this spring's Beijing set of T-shirts features designs from two of the best movies from my generation and one of the funniest 60s shows ever: Ghostbusters 2 (1989), Back to the Future (1985) and Adam West's Batman (1966-1968).

Adam West's Batman blows away Nolan's moronic version. Photo from TIME Life.

The T-shirts are 79RMB (roughly USD$13.00) each and I ended up choosing a T with the DeLorean schematics on the front and the flux capacitor time circuits on the back.

The Adam West Batman shirt had a hilarious picture of Batman dancing the Batusi with the very 60s quote "The manly art of self defence."

Note: According to the Uniqlo.cn website they also have a Yvonne Craig Batgirl and Julie Newmar Catwoman T-shirt for women. Rawwrrr.

The Ghostbusters 2 T-shirt had a black and white version, but both unfortunately featured metallic silver and yellow trimmings respectively so I opted for a Herge's Tintin (1929) shirt instead. I like the Stay Puft grey shirt though. It was tough leaving the store without the Ghostbusters 2 shirt considering that it's a small consolation for the ridiculously stupid upcoming female version and idiotic reboot.

F*ck the upcoming Ghostbuster movies. The Real Ghostbusters were four middle-aged guys with struggling hairlines and amazing wit - the greatest team in cinematic supernatural comedy history.

I'm pretty sure the Chinese buyers at the shop had little idea how awesome Back to the Future, Ghostbusters 2 and 1960's Batman is and always will be. I plan to wear the DeLorean shirt in the next technical conference I'm attending. In the meantime, I'm checking out the other Uniqlo stores in Beijing for other designs they have in stock.

Note: They're also selling slightly more expensive shirts featuring logos from old and new rock bands such as Metallica, Aerosmith and Wu-Tang Clan. The Red Hot Chili Peppers T was pretty cool though I wish they had a shirt with the GNR Use Your Illusion II (1991) album design like the hoodie I used to wear back in the day.
